Digital Nomads and other Fortune Seekers

This scene (rough cut) will be in my final film for the MsC Visual Anthropology. The film follows three so called “digital nomads” who have landed on the island of Madeira—one digging into family roots, one leaving behind a dead-end hometown, and one simply seeking new experiences. But while they move freely in search of something more, they do this in a world where others face locked borders and long waits. The film explores the blurry line between following your dreams and escaping your life—and asks: where is the fortune of fortune seekers located: on a tropical island? Or in one’s head?

Twisted Twenties

Beautiful yet chaotic. Adventurous yet anxious. Redefining oneself yet not knowing who you are. Your 20’s can be quite twisted. At least mine are. Older generations tend to look back on their 20’s with quite some nostalgia, which is of course not misplaced, but also results in misunderstandings with the youngsters today. “I know what I would do if I had as many opportunities back then as people your age have today.” And “Study to get a good job.” Or “No! have fun as long as you can!”, are common phrases to be heard. This movie’s goal is dedicated to creating some more understanding and knowledge that being in your 20’s is not only rainbows and unicorns. It can be super terrifying, but it’s nevertheless absolutely worth it.

Wat zou jij willen zijn?

‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ is a question we’ve answered many times as a child. For many of us only to let those childhood dreams go in vain as the realities of adulthood kick in. Comfort over fun, rationality over dreams, financial security over …. Did we choose a path because we love it, or because we think it’s best for us and our future? Would choose differently if talent, background and money are taken out of the equation? If you could do anything, and make a decent living out of it, what would you be doing?
